Environmental sustainability is a significant challenge for our time
Cities across the United States are moving toward “clean, eco-friendly” environments, which make them a great place to work. Wallet Hub compared the 100 most populous cities in the US to determine the greenest cities in the nation. They used four areas to rate the cities: environment, transportation, energy sources, and lifestyle & policy. The number one green city according to the data is San Francisco, CA, followed closely behind by San Diego and Irvine, CA.

Chesapeake, Virginia, ranked number one in the environmental factor. Oakland, CA, Buffalo, NY, Reno, NV, Hialeah, FL, and San Bernardino, CA, all tied with Virginia Beach, VA, for the lowest greenhouse-gas emissions per capita. This factor includes an air-quality index, greenhouse-gas emissions per capita, urban heat island effect, green space, and water quality. The highest percentage of green space award goes to Anchorage, Alaska. Minneapolis, Minnesota, has the highest bike score, and Cincinnati, Ohio, has the lowest.
