According to data from Payscale and ZipRecruiter shared exclusively with CNBC Make It, the most in-demand jobs that don’t require a degree are in construction, plumbing, and manufacturing:
- Construction Superintendent, average salary of $84,600
- Journeyman Plumber, average salary of $61,500
- Manufacturing Production Manager, average salary of $71,800
To compile the list, Payscale analyzed 85,715 salary profiles of American workers without higher education. Salary data was collected between April 2022 and April 2024. From this sample, Payscale identified a list of jobs and ranked them based on average salary for workers without a degree.
Next, to determine which are the highest-paying jobs in demand, ZipRecruiter analyzed hiring trends over the past six months to see which jobs saw the largest increase in job openings.
According to ZipRecruiter, all of these jobs saw at least a 16% increase in openings between October 2023 and March 2024. Construction superintendents saw the highest increase in demand, with vacancies increasing by over 128%.
Other well-paying jobs that experienced slightly less demand, but are still hiring at a good pace, include fleet managers, who oversee drivers and vehicles like delivery trucks owned or leased by their companies, and electricians. The average salary for non-degree fleet managers is $64,600, while that of electricians is $62,600 on average, according to Payscale.
According to Ruth Thomas, pay equity strategist at Payscale, construction, manufacturing, and home services professions, which historically prioritize skills over degrees when hiring, continue to offer some of the best opportunities to earn up to six figures without going to college.
Although more companies are eliminating degree requirements for jobs, competency-based hiring remains a recent trend that “has not yet become common practice” across all sectors, Thomas adds.
